it's the rule that you live by and die for

Who: Shepard [Sarah Wilcox] and OPEN.
What: Work. Research. Things.
Where: The guard force HQ, then the library. Feel free to run into her as a coworker in the guard force, a random person doing their own research in the library, or whatever you like.
When: Let's backdate this to Friday, April 13th.

It's become apparent to Shepard by now, almost two weeks after (waking up?) arriving here, that she's not going to be going anywhere anytime very soon. It's intensely frustrating to her; more than anything, she feels like she needs to be back on Earth. Not that she's thrilled to go back to being under house arrest or anything, but the idea of something happening while she's gone leaves her anxious. Sooner or later, the Reapers will come back — and maybe what she did in the Bahak system makes that likelihood later rather than sooner, but the possibility is still there.

Of course, none of that's supposed to be real, is it? All a dream. That's bullshit as far as she's concerned. Maybe it's not any more implausible than the entire idea that an ancient race of machines returns to the galaxy every 50,000 years to destroy organic life, but she's never been more certain of anything in her life than she is of the existence of the Reapers. This? This doesn't have that same weight. Not even remotely.

All the same, she's decided to play along for now, going to her assigned 'job' every morning partly because it doesn't make her look suspicious, partly because it gives her a chance to talk to some of the people who seem to have been here longer, and partly because she can assess the structure and capabilities of the guard force from the inside. It's closer to civilian law enforcement than it is to the military, she thinks — probably wouldn't hold up for long with enough people putting forth a concentrated resistance effort — though she also has the impression there's more to it than meets the eye.

When she leaves work, the first thing she does is head to the library. The lack of concrete information frustrates her, and there are a few things that just don't add up; the library seems like the best place to try a little research. Shepard's a soldier, not a researcher, but she's also one of those people who tends to believe that to have something done right, you have to either do it yourself or have it done by someone you trust implicitly, and she waves off the librarian who tries to offer to help, heading for one of the terminals in the reference section.

If she was really ever this "Sarah Wilcox" person — someone she has no recollection at all of being — there has to be some information about her somewhere, some public records. A birth certificate, census records, anything. But no matter what she searches for, nothing comes up.

And then there's the so-called "Disaster." Shepard's not unfamiliar with disasters that wipe out entire civilizations — in fact, she's sorely tempted to do a keyword search for Reapers, just to see what comes up, see if it carries over here, too — but the fact that no one at all seems to know what happened, even just as myths or legends, is something she finds incredibly suspicious.

Someone somewhere is hiding something, and Shepard doesn't like it in the least.

Poland wasn't a researcher himself, but the library was the only source for anything to possibly prove this was all some lie. Poland didn't believe any of this for a minute.

But Poland's gone through some of the paper books already and isn't finding what he wants. He doesn't care about science or anything like that. Letting out a loud, irritated sigh, he sets the book aside near the terminals and brushes his hair back with his fingers.

Malcolm's been doing his job...though not, admittedly, to the best of his ability. Because there was no point in blindly following all the rules. He can fudge things here and there; it's not like Thomas wants him doing anything major (read: interesting). Baby steps indeed. And some of the rules just seem harsh. Letting a little made-up trouble slide, that's no problem, so long as nobody snitches and gets him into trouble with the higher-ups. He wants to pretend to get on their good side, after all.

He especially wants, since he saw them sitting on the desk his first day there, whatever files Thomas and the others have. On them. On the world. On everything. And then, of course, he wants information on what's out there, and he wants to know who's behind all of this.

He's surprised--and then realizes that he really shouldn't be--when he notices that woman from the gym is also on the guard force. Makes about as much sense as him being on there. That makes at least two sleepers in a slightly elevated position, a better position to do anything in. Surely she must have some similar ideas on what should be done.

And talking to her is a distraction from the mundane little things a probationary officer is expected to do. He approaches in the hall, casual, though his voice is low. Wouldn't want anyone overhearing. "Fancy meeting you here. I don't suppose you've been any luckier than anyone else in finding out what's going on around here?"
