The first few days, when he wasn't exploring, Aziraphale was sleeping. There was a great deal that he had to do to make his - John's - home livable again, primarily dusting, but he was still trying to acclimatize to the fact that he'd have to do it all by hand. As a result, he didn't even start until the Tuesday morning after they'd arrived.

It was fortunate that John's shop was not similar enough to Aziraphale's own in London to make him nostalgic. In layout it was not terribly different - the large front room full of shelves crammed with things, the small back room with a squeaky old door, the bedroom and kitchen upstairs, and, of course, the layers of dust on everything - but in every other respect, from the technology to the well-worn cookware in the kitchen, it was different enough that he could convince himself he'd had nothing to do with the creation of it. The smell unnerved him, though, he had to admit. He felt that a shop full of knowledge in whatever form should smell like paper and binding and glue, but the metal shelves and the assortment of differently-sized consoles behind the plywood desk made the whole place smell like the mobile shop Crowley had made him go to once. Even the Library in the Cave had smelled more right.

The back room had been a nice surprise, of course. There wasn't anything by way of paper books in the front of the shop - presumably they hadn't been profitable for John, assuming John had actually existed - but there was a small shelf in the back room absolutely stuffed with paper books. He hadn't recognized any of the titles, of course, although he'd spent a mad moment looking through the shelf for a copy of Lyrical Ballads, or The Picture of Dorian Grey, or a Bible.

That was impossible. Nor were any of these first editions. Still, some of them looked interesting, at the very least, and he made a note of several possible starting points. If he had books, he had some sort of familiar ground, and he was da-- bloody well going to take advantage of any he could find.

Another lay upstairs, sitting on the stove as if waiting for him: a kettle. He smiled to himself when he saw that before filling it up, putting it on to boil, and locating with great ease a bag of looseleaf Earl Grey in the cabinet by the sink. He found and washed a tea infuser, pot, and mug just as the kettle whistled, poured it in, and sat in relaxed silence as it steeped. No hope for milk, of course, but there was sugar.

He'd get to cleaning, he thought as he took the first sip of what was really the best tea he could hope for under the circumstances. He really would. Eventually.

Later, he would be very angry with himself for leaving the front door unlocked. Very angry indeed.

"Killjoy." Gabriel pouted and then leaned forward abruptly to reach for the sugar bowl so he could scoop a little more into it. Only a pinch? Psh. "C'mon, Azzy, don't be stingy on me now!"

But the archangel didn't feel up to manifesting a human, if only because it would make Aziraphale extra annoyed, and Gabriel had had enough of making Aziraphale mad for one day. Besides, he was still trying to figure out how to imbue them will a little bit of life.

"Don't supposed you have any cookies?" he asked almost innocently as he brought the teacup up, loaded with enough sugar that there was no way he'd taste the tea.

Well, that was a reminder he certainly didn't need. Gabriel made a face and took a long swig of the greatly sweetened tea just because he could. "Technically. I'm sure they wouldn't let that happen, bro."

He waved a hand. "Not if I was gonna eat them, I wouldn't. I was making a point last time."

While he didn't actually stand up to start poking around, the archangel's gaze did start eyeing the cupboards speculatively. There, or there, or there?

The point was that Aziraphale needed to lighten up, and for whatever reason Gabriel had been willing to put his sense of pride as a trickster on the line to do it. A dangerous sentiment, really. The archangel didn't know what he could have been thinking.

"That anyone who tried those particular ones had a even chance of getting burned," he said, and did indeed push himself to his feet, cup in hand, to started poking through Aziraphale's cupboards. Surely he at least had ingredients?

"Are you kidding?" Gabriel asked, his voice somewhat muffled because he'd shoved his head into one of the cupboards just to make sure it really was as empty as it looked. "Sometimes chance is the only way to play. Casinos? The ones where you can predict things through soul-reading are just too easy. No fun at all."

Gabriel blew a raspberry into the cupboard. "Like I'd leave that part up to chance once I actually hit on the right plan to get 'em a good one."

He pulled his head out and spun around, cup still in hand, to shake his finger at Aziraphale. "You need more food in your cupboards, Azzy. There's disappointing and there's just sad, and this situation isn't the former, lemme tell you."

"Basic human needs," Gabriel repeated, rolling his eyes and flipping the door closed with a slam. "Well, there's your problem. Tell me, Azzy, what do you define as a basic human need?"

He leaned back against the counter to slurp at his tea, already knowing the answer but still waiting for a reply.

"Boring," Gabriel said with a roll of his eyes, hopping backwards up onto the counter and snapping his fingers at Aziraphale in exasperation. "Come on, it's not like anyone's here to care and we all need to eat the good stuff. We practically own this city right now!"

"Steaks," Gabriel said promptly. "Burgers. Puddings. Pastries. Ice-cream. Chocolate. And things need to have an owner before they can be stolen, bro."

Gabriel grinned, slurped deliberately loud at his tea, and swung his legs childishly.

"Had," Gabriel repeated, and then shrugged. "Way I figure it, bro, we need 'em right now. They don't. And psh." He waved a hand. "It tastes good. Personally though, gimme the cheese and grapes deal."
