Gathered in the morning haze, Sleepers were brought to the mouth of the Cave with plenty of supplies and equipment. Compasses that would point them toward the City. Backpacks full of clothes and food, medical kits, tents and even weapons. Stun rifles and knives — to fight off any unwanted company, they said. ("Watch out for their bite," Ryan had commented. "Those fuckers are downright feral.") The straight and narrow path would get them there in six days if they kept a good clip. They were sent off just like that. Refusals to leave were met with a wall of guard force officers blocking the entrance back into the cave city. No way to go but forward, unless someone was particularly stalwart about remaining.

From the exterminator's station near the mouth, leaving the Cave was as simple as a short hike upward into the fresh air of the Overworld. Dust and an uncomfortable sort of heat pervaded the atmosphere, light winds stirring up the sand and teasing the meager bits of vegetation that had grown. No matter what direction you looked... it was all wasteland, cracked ground and desolate emptiness. Jutting up from scarred ground were boulders and small spires made entirely of glass and patches of stone; instead of reflecting the harsh sunlight, they seemed to absorb it and only add to the muted loneliness of the atmosphere. As far as the eye could see, there was no life to be found.

With no other option, the Sleepers eventually made their way onward.

"I was trying to remember before I woke up here," Twitch admitted. "A lot of the children didn't like me," he added, a little hesitantly. He wasn't stupid, he saw the connection. Whoever he was, it was someone that the children feared. It made him afraid to know who he was for any certainty, not that it did much good here.

Especially not if the dream hadn't even been real. "I'll... give myself a new identity here. That I can remember from the start." He rubbed at his wrists, smiling a bit. "Just so long as it doesn't involve using a gun."

Brow furrowing (the children didn't like him?), Liam nodded slowly. He didn't have all of the information for this, and it was becoming increasingly more apparent that Twitch was missing a bunch of the pieces as well — along with simply not mentioning the ones he actually was in possession of. For another time, perhaps.

"Suppose some good has come of all... this," he admitted reluctantly. "Gotta say, that's a pretty rare viewpoint on the situation, though."

"Yeah, I'm sure it is," Twitch admitted, trying to keep a cheerful tone. "But it doesn't much good, longing to return home, right? We have to make due." He paused before muttering under his breath, "If we even make it there." He wasn't even sure how much he could do, but he was going to be doing whatever he could to help out the group.

"We'll make it," Liam replied automatically. He didn't know it for certain, didn't know if he actually wanted to go where the Workers were leading them, but what he did know was that they were a large group of hopefully competent adults fitted with the necessities for survival on their trip. If one of them faltered, there would be plenty more to help pick up the slack.

They just needed to work together.

"Trust me. We'll make it, we just have to keep one foot in front of the other, eh?"

"Yeah, you're right," Twitch said, but there was something in his voice that made it clear he wasn't so confident. It wasn't that he didn't believe the other man-- he did. But there was something about his own skills that he wasn't sure would be useful at all.

He had, in his dream, been able to do things-- been able to see things that he couldn't seem to do now. No powers in this world, because they had all been dreams. "It'll be nice to sleep in a bed again."

Liam chuckled quietly, allowing the amusement to wash over him and slowly drain away some of the gritty memories that clung to him like muck. "Somewhere we're not being kept tabs on, either," he agreed. Not that he knew any of this for certain, but the fantasy of it was certainly good motivation. "Somewhere safe."

"That might be hoping for too much," he muttered. He didn't expect that, assuming that they weren't being sent off to die, that they were free from being watched by people in the shadows. But, he could dream. He could hope that it was actual freedom, and enough time for him to start to reclaim his mind and his identity. "When we get there, I'll need all the help I can get. Are you... are you willing to help me?"
