NOTES:

Dawn on the departure date for the next group to go on their pilgrimage was grey and misty. Packs with a week's supply of food, clothing, and water as well as small first aid kits, their compasses, and weapons were given hastily to the Sleepers before they were herded out to the mouth of the Cave. The Workers gave only the minimum amount of advice ("follow the compass" and "watch out for the beasts out there") before they kicked the Sleepers out, blocking off the way back into the Cave with their bodies and stun weapons pointed at the Sleepers. It was very clear what they wanted. They wanted them out.

The wasteland before them was one thing that had stayed the same. It was still as desolate as ever with no signs of anything living out before them. Large pieces of glass jutted out of the ground like watchtowers looking over the remains of what was once a living, beautiful world. The mist would clear soon enough and even then, there was nothing to be seen but dust and glass for miles ahead. Time to get going, Sleepers. You have a long walk ahead of you.

WHERE: Diamond City, which is due northeast of the Cave.
WHEN: Backdated to the evening of May 7th through May 11th.
WARNINGS: None so far.

Among the ruins and tattered memories of the world outside, the Diamond City stood in untouched splendor. Its buildings reached greedily toward the sky, higher and higher toward the center ring. The tallest building of all was a skyscraper supporting what appeared to be a gigantic diamond atop the ornate spire at its highest point. It shone onto the rest of the City below, adding an ethereal prism to whatever surfaces it touched and only serving to highlight the the strange feeling that the Diamond City once lived and thrived as a beautiful metropolis.

This reputation was no more. The streets were empty: clean and untouched for a century, looking as if the residents had simply up and left mere days before. Water flowed freely through the canals that sometimes ran underneath the roads or suspended living districts, thick in the east and thinning out in frequency toward the west. The waters seemed surprisingly clean, although no manner of living creature appeared in their depths.

Morning came soon enough. He hadn't quite rested as well as his body demanded, but he managed to sneak in a few hours' worth of sleep and report for "work" at the Library. It was really more just a way to busy himself, puttering about to familiarize himself with the system in case anyone asked him a question. The man he reported to had been understanding enough to let him in (he'd forgotten his keycard, writing it off as not worth it due to the magnetic strip) and not to shoo him out of the back corner Sefton wedged himself into to accomplish this task, where he stayed for much of the day, falling into the words and processes and pretending like the panic wasn't lurking in his gut every minute of the way.

As soon as his shift was declared over, Sefton rocketed from the building and made a beeline for the Supply Depot. Something was missing and he was very intent to get back the pieces of normalcy that might help to anchor him. He left soon after with a new scarf wrapped around his neck and a comfortable pair of tennis shoes hooked on his fingers. (He had an ID card foisted on him while he was there, too, but it wasn't like it really mattered.)

It was when he finally made his way back to the living quarters that he deemed it safe enough to sit to change his shoes. It was a small thing, but it helped and that was almost worse than simply staying completely on guard. He tilted his head back against the wall next to his door and stayed there for a while. He didn't really care to notice how long.

Gathered in the morning haze, Sleepers were brought to the mouth of the Cave with plenty of supplies and equipment. Compasses that would point them toward the City. Backpacks full of clothes and food, medical kits, tents and even weapons. Stun rifles and knives — to fight off any unwanted company, they said. ("Watch out for their bite," Ryan had commented. "Those fuckers are downright feral.") The straight and narrow path would get them there in six days if they kept a good clip. They were sent off just like that. Refusals to leave were met with a wall of guard force officers blocking the entrance back into the cave city. No way to go but forward, unless someone was particularly stalwart about remaining.

From the exterminator's station near the mouth, leaving the Cave was as simple as a short hike upward into the fresh air of the Overworld. Dust and an uncomfortable sort of heat pervaded the atmosphere, light winds stirring up the sand and teasing the meager bits of vegetation that had grown. No matter what direction you looked... it was all wasteland, cracked ground and desolate emptiness. Jutting up from scarred ground were boulders and small spires made entirely of glass and patches of stone; instead of reflecting the harsh sunlight, they seemed to absorb it and only add to the muted loneliness of the atmosphere. As far as the eye could see, there was no life to be found.

With no other option, the Sleepers eventually made their way onward.

Sky of Diamonds

Sky of Diamonds is a panfandom roleplaying game. Characters are awoken from a cryogenic sleep, told that all of their memories are simply dreams from their long rest. While they were out, the Disaster struck and destroyed a large percentage of the world, leaving only the Cave, where they are, and the City, where they will be going.

 They are then sent out on a pilgrimage across a wasteland known as the Land of Glass in order to reach the Diamond City and rebuild their lives. What is the meaning of their lack of memories? What was the Disaster? Who is the Caretaker? These are the questions you may ask yourself. It's up to you and your fellow Sleepers to find the answers.
